On November 24, 1964, Pfc. Roy Mahoney was injured during a training exercise at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. Pfc. Royce Sutton was the medic on location.
This is a portion of the story of their chance meeting and the change it had on each of their lives.
These two men met for the second time since the accident in Abilene, Texas on April 10, 2009.

Mourning Doves are monogamous birds that share in the nesting process. Typically, one of the doves will sit on the nest from the morning through the afternoon. The other dove will sit on the next from the evening through the night.
We discovered this nest up in one of our trees. It took a picnic table and a ladder to get high enough to get some of the shots but it was worth it.
This story has an unfortunate ending, however. We have a cat that has a taste for all things bird. We think she got one of the doves and both eggs. The good news is that doves nest three or four times a year and often come back to the same place. Next time, I will put up some chicken-wire to keep the cat away.

Over the last two years, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know a bunch of guys that love history and love baseball. There’s only one problem: they spell it as “base ball” with two separate words. This spelling comes from how the game was spelled and played during the 1860’s and 1870’s. Join me for this brief introduction to Vintage Base Ball as told by guys with names like Joel “Flaps” Brant, Bob “Bonecrusher” Wettemann, “Fossil” Joe Christensen and Warren “Spider” Simpson.

I discovered a few months ago that some electronic devices don’t like being run over by a ton and a half tractor with an additional ton of cotton in the hopper. I was south of San Angelo, Texas shooting video for a friend of mine that wanted to do a story on harvesting cotton. As we arrived, the owner of the combine offered to let me ride on the combine, up and down the rows while the tractor stripped the cotton off the stalks. I grabbed my camera and my M-Audio 24/96 Microtrack Portable recorder. I included the portable recorder in case I had the opportunity to capture some audio that I could use to enhance the video I would capture. I had an old cell phone holder on my hip that I stuck the recorder into. I had never been that close to a combine when it was stripping cotton so I was surprised how noisy and dusty the experience was, sitting on the outside of the cabin, shooting various angles as we moved through the field. I’m still a relative neophyte to all this video stuff. And, as I’ve said before, I’m learning more each day than I ever thought I would learn. I’ve been reading about color correction the last few weeks. While it doesn’t seem to be mandatory for decent video production, it does seem to expedient. I edit in Final Cut Express and have started working with color correction in FCE. While its not the full-featured tool set of FCP, it does offer some basic capabilities. I found this website that does a good of introducing one to the capabilities of color correction in FCE.

I found another site that has some great information on it. One piece of useful information is a TrueColor preset for the Canon XH-A1. There is also an insightful article on the website about using your tripod as a glidecam.
And, the last entry for the day is on white balance. This YouTube video only covers the basics of white balance for the XH-A1 but it is a start. If you’re like me and just trying to get your mind wrapped around some of these concepts, its a good place to start.

That’s about it for today. Hopefully, I can learn a thing or two while I go through the process of wrapping my mind around color correction, better presets and shooting practices as well as white balance and post my experiences here in the near future.
